UK Senior Care Worker Jobs With Skilled Worker Sponsorship: 2026 Visa, Salary and ILR Guide
Understand UK senior care worker visa sponsorship in 2026, occupation code 6136, salary rules, eligible in-country applications, documents, employers, fees and the route to ILR.
UK senior care worker jobs with Skilled Worker sponsorship once offered a widely used route for overseas care professionals. The rules have now changed. From 22 July 2025, occupation code 6136, senior care workers, is not open to a new Health and Care Worker visa application from outside the UK. It remains available in limited circumstances for qualifying people already in the UK who are extending, updating or switching immigration status.
An advert promising a new overseas applicant a senior care worker Certificate of Sponsorship, or CoS, may be outdated or fraudulent. Verify the occupation code, sponsor licence, Care Quality Commission registration in England, salary and duties before paying for services.
Can overseas applicants still get senior care worker sponsorship?
Usually, no. The official Health and Care Worker visa eligibility page lists code 6136 only for people extending, updating or switching. A person switching from another eligible UK visa must also have worked legally for the sponsoring employer in the care role for at least three months.
Applicants outside the UK should not submit a visa application for code 6136 merely because a recruiter says sponsorship is available. Other eligible health occupations, including some registered nursing and allied health roles, remain open if the applicant meets the professional, salary and sponsorship requirements. Those roles have different occupation codes and may require UK professional registration.
| Applicant’s position | Is code 6136 potentially available? | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| Outside the UK, seeking first care sponsorship | No | New overseas applications under code 6136 are closed |
| In the UK, switching from another visa | Possibly | Must meet switching rules and have worked legally for the sponsor in the role for at least three months |
| Existing sponsored senior care worker | Possibly | Must meet extension or visa-update requirements |
| Applicant for a different eligible health profession | Possibly | Correct occupation code, qualified role, licensed sponsor and required registration |
What does a senior care worker do?
A senior care worker supervises care assistants and supports adults in residential homes, nursing homes, supported-living settings or domiciliary care. Typical duties include preparing care plans, administering or monitoring medication within competence, keeping records, coordinating shifts, safeguarding residents, supporting personal care and reporting concerns to managers or clinical staff.
Relevant job titles may include senior care assistant, senior support worker, lead care worker and senior home-care worker. The title alone does not determine visa eligibility. The actual duties must match occupation code 6136. Construction jobs are unrelated to this route and should not be inserted into a care-worker visa application.
Employers commonly look for adult social care experience, English ability, safeguarding knowledge, medication competence, leadership, references and a criminal-record check. A Level 2 or Level 3 adult care qualification can strengthen an application.
Visa type, salary and costs
The relevant immigration category is normally the Health and Care Worker visa, a discounted part of the Skilled Worker route. It requires a genuine job offer from an approved sponsor and an electronic CoS. In England, an employer sponsoring code 6135 or 6136 must also be registered with the CQC.
For the occupations subject to the separate salary rules, GOV.UK currently states that the usual requirement is at least ÂŁ31,300 a year or the applicable lower going rate, whichever is higher. Limited discounts may apply, but normally not below ÂŁ25,000. Pay must also comply with minimum-wage and working-time rules. Always calculate eligibility from guaranteed basic gross pay and the permitted weekly hours, not from uncertain overtime.

Eligibility requirements and documents
An eligible applicant normally needs:
- a valid passport;
- a qualifying UK job offer and CoS reference number;
- the correct occupation code and salary;
- a licensed Home Office sponsor;
- CQC registration for a sponsoring care provider in England;
- proof of English, normally at CEFR level B2 for a new application, through an approved test, a qualifying UK award or an eligible English-taught degree assessed by Ecctis;
- proof of maintenance funds, unless an exemption applies;
- a criminal-record certificate where required for the role and countries of residence;
- an approved tuberculosis certificate when required, including for applicants resident in Nigeria;
- certified translations for documents not in English or Welsh;
- evidence of lawful UK work for the sponsor for the required three-month period when switching into code 6136.
The CoS is an electronic record, not a certificate an agent can sell. The employer assigns it, and the applicant normally has three months to use it. Check the licensed sponsor register and, in England, the CQC register.
How to apply for eligible in-country sponsorship
- Confirm that switching is permitted. Check your current visa category and the specific switching restrictions.
- Build relevant experience. For a switch into codes 6135 or 6136, meet the rule requiring legal work for the sponsor in the role for at least three months.
- Search for genuine vacancies. Use the employer’s career page, NHS Jobs, Find a Job and reputable recruitment services.
- Verify the employer. Match its exact legal name against the sponsor register and CQC records. A trading name may differ from the licensed legal entity.
- Check the offer. Review salary, weekly hours, location, deductions, duties, probation, accommodation and repayment clauses. An employment solicitor or regulated UK immigration lawyer can assess unusual terms.
- Receive the CoS. Confirm that the occupation code, pay and work address are correct.
- Apply online. Use the official Health and Care Worker application route. Upload documents and prove identity as instructed.
- Wait for a decision. Do not start restricted sponsored work until your immigration permission allows it.
Employers and recruitment channels to monitor
There is no honest permanent list of companies “offering sponsorship.” Sponsor licences and vacancies change, and code 6136 is closed to new overseas applicants. The organisations below are large care employers or official vacancy channels to research for eligible in-country roles. Their inclusion is not a promise of a sponsored vacancy.
| Organisation | Careers or application contact | Head office or official contact address |
|---|---|---|
| NHS Jobs | jobs.nhs.uk | Online recruitment service for NHS vacancies |
| UK Find a Job | findajob.dwp.gov.uk | Online service operated by the Department for Work and Pensions |
| Skills for Care | International recruitment | West Gate, 6 Grace Street, Leeds LS1 2RP |
| Care UK | careuk.com/careers | Connaught House, 850 The Crescent, Colchester Business Park, Colchester CO4 9QB |
| HC-One | careers.hc-one.co.uk | Southgate House, Archer Street, Darlington DL3 6AH |
| Barchester Healthcare | jobs.barchester.com | The Aspect, 12 Finsbury Square, London EC2A 1AS |
| Agincare | agincare.com/care-jobs | Agincare House, Admiralty Buildings, Castletown, Portland, Dorset DT5 1BB |
Confirm each employer’s details and recruitment policy. Ask whether the exact vacancy is eligible, not whether the organisation sponsored workers in the past. Never pay for a job offer or CoS. Check intermediaries against the NHS Employers ethical recruiters list.
Applying at the embassy and visa verification
Applicants do not normally file a work-visa application at a British embassy. The application is completed online. UKVI then directs the applicant either to the UK Immigration: ID Check app or to an authorised visa application centre for fingerprints and a photograph. The embassy or high commission should not be used to verify a private job offer.
For Nigeria, use the British High Commission Abuja page for official consular information and the UKVI contact service for visa-process enquiries. UKVI staff cannot predict whether an application will succeed. Nigerian applicants who require a TB test must use a clinic approved by the Home Office.
Route to permanent residence and settlement benefits
Express Entry and the Rural Community Immigration Pilot are Canadian programmes. They do not provide UK permanent residence and should not appear in a UK visa application.
The relevant UK settlement route is indefinite leave to remain, or ILR. A Health and Care Worker may qualify after five years of lawful residence in eligible work categories, subject to the rules in force at application. Current requirements include continuous residence, no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period, continued need for the sponsored job, the applicable salary and passing the Life in the UK Test for most applicants aged 18 to 64. GOV.UK’s ILR guidance currently lists an application fee of £3,226 per person.
ILR allows a successful applicant to live, work and study in the UK without time-limited visa sponsorship, access eligible benefits and later apply for British citizenship if the separate citizenship requirements are met. It is not automatic after five years.
Common immigration and recruitment mistakes
- Applying from overseas under code 6136 despite the closure of that route.
- Paying for a CoS, interview, job offer or sponsor “slot.”
- Trusting screenshots instead of checking the live sponsor and CQC registers.
- Accepting a job title that does not match the real duties or occupation code.
- Counting overtime or allowances incorrectly when testing the salary threshold.
- Using false experience letters, bank statements or English-language evidence.
- Applying before completing the required three months of lawful work for the sponsor when switching.
- Confusing an employment agency with the actual licensed sponsor.
- Assuming dependants are automatically permitted. Care-worker dependant rules are restricted and must be checked against the applicant’s dates and circumstances.
- Using an unregulated visa consultant. Check the Immigration Advice Authority register or instruct a UK solicitor.
Conclusion
UK senior care worker sponsorship is now primarily an in-country transition route, not a fresh overseas pathway. Applicants need genuine vacancies, compliant pay, the correct code, a licensed employer and accurate evidence. Overseas candidates should consider other eligible health professions for which they genuinely qualify.
