Motor Mechanic Jobs in Australia for Foreign Workers: Visa Sponsorship, Salary and PR Pathways
Australian motor mechanic jobs for foreign workers: salary benchmarks, employer-sponsored visas, skills assessment, recruiters, and permanent residency routes.
Qualified overseas mechanics can pursue Australian jobs through an employer sponsored work visa or, if eligible, a points tested skilled migration program. Motor Mechanic (General), ANZSCO 321211, is on Australia’s Core Skills Occupation List. Diesel Motor Mechanic, 321212, is a separate occupation. Select the occupation that matches your actual duties and assessment, since a light vehicle mechanic cannot assume every heavy equipment vacancy fits their trade. Core Skills Occupation List.
What jobs can foreign mechanics do?
Work includes servicing and diagnosing passenger cars, commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and diesel fleets. Automotive technicians may specialize in electronic diagnostics, transmissions, brakes or hybrid systems. Construction related opportunities typically involve maintaining excavators, loaders and other site machinery, often advertised as heavy diesel mechanic or mobile plant mechanic. These are mechanical trades supporting construction, not general construction labour jobs. Confirm the nominated occupation code with the employer before applying.

Which Australian visas apply?
| Route | Who it suits | Permanent residence prospect |
|---|---|---|
| Skills in Demand, subclass 482, Core Skills | Eligible mechanic with an approved sponsoring employer and nominated position | Potential later employer nomination under subclass 186, subject to its rules |
| Employer Nomination Scheme, subclass 186 | Eligible worker nominated directly for permanent residence, or qualifying worker in the Temporary Residence Transition stream | Permanent visa if granted |
| Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional, subclass 494 | Eligible worker sponsored for a position in designated regional Australia | Possible subclass 191 application after at least three years and other requirements |
| Skilled Independent 189 / Skilled Nominated 190 | Invited points tested applicants; 190 also requires state or territory nomination | Permanent visas if granted |
| Skilled Work Regional 491 | Invited applicant nominated by a state or territory or sponsored by an eligible family member | Possible subclass 191 after satisfying regional visa requirements |
The 482 Core Skills route generally requires relevant skills, at least one year of relevant experience, English evidence unless exempt, and a position meeting salary rules. Occupation eligibility and assessment rules differ by visa. A 494 applicant generally needs an appropriate skills assessment and must usually be under 45 unless exempt. The 189, 190 and 491 routes use SkillSelect, and an expression of interest does not guarantee an invitation. See 482 Core Skills, 186 Direct Entry, 494, and SkillSelect.
Express Entry and the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) are Canadian programs. They do not confer Australian residence. Australia’s comparable options include employer nomination, state nomination and designated regional visas. The 191 route generally requires holding a qualifying 491 or 494 visa for at least three years, meeting visa conditions and supplying required Australian tax assessment notices. Subclass 191.
Eligibility and documents
Prepare a valid passport, trade certificate or apprenticeship record, detailed CV, employment references describing duties and dates, payslips or tax records supporting experience, and English test results where required. The visa application may also require a skills assessment, police clearances, health examinations, family relationship documents and certified translations. Requirements depend on the visa and individual case.
Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) assesses trade skills through different programs depending on occupation, passport, training location and visa type. Use its skills assessment finder before paying. A positive assessment for one trade or visa route does not automatically cover another. Where a local licence is required for specific work, confirm the relevant state rules as well.

Applying from abroad, embassy and visa verification
An Australian High Commission does not issue a mechanic job offer or replace the online visa application process. Applicants generally use ImmiAccount and follow official instructions about biometrics or appointments. For applicants in Nigeria, the Australian High Commission in Abuja lists PMB 5152, Wuse Post Office, Abuja 00009 as its postal address, telephone +234 (0) 9460 6960, and general enquiry email ahc.abuja@dfat.gov.au. This is not a walk-in visa lodgement address; consult the High Commission’s official website for any current physical location or appointment instructions. Visa case questions belong with Home Affairs.
Once granted, check your visa and conditions through the government’s VEVO service. Verify a migration adviser independently before paying. Keep control of your ImmiAccount, passport and original documents.
Settlement, workplace rights and common errors
A sponsored mechanic may be able to bring eligible family members, subject to the subclass and application rules. Permanent visa holders may access broader work rights and certain services, while waiting periods can apply to some government payments. Temporary visa health cover and Medicare eligibility depend on circumstances, so budget for appropriate insurance and verify your entitlement.
Avoid claiming diesel experience you cannot document, applying under the wrong occupation, mistaking a recruiter for a sponsor, treating a job interview as a visa grant, or assuming 482 automatically becomes PR. Do not rely on old visa names, pay for a “guaranteed” sponsorship slot, or accept pay below your legal entitlements. Migrant workers have Australian workplace protections. Fair Work Ombudsman.
Start with your occupation match and documentary evidence. Then target specific roles where the employer can discuss a lawful nomination. If the facts of your case are complex, a properly registered Australian migration professional can help assess the employer sponsored work visa, skilled migration and permanent residency options.
