UK Care Jobs for Nigerians in 2026: New Visa Rules and Alternatives
Can Nigerians still get UK care jobs with visa sponsorship in 2026? Learn the new rules, eligible alternatives, salary requirements, visa process, PR route and scam checks.
For years, “UK care jobs with visa sponsorship” was promoted as one of the easiest relocation routes for Nigerians. That advice is now dangerously outdated.
From 22 July 2025, the UK stopped accepting new overseas Skilled Worker applications for care workers and senior care workers under occupation codes 6135 and 6136. A person living in Nigeria therefore cannot normally obtain a new Health and Care Worker visa for an ordinary caregiver, home carer or senior care worker position in 2026.
This does not mean every UK health and social care opportunity has closed. Nigerians can still apply directly for eligible higher-skilled jobs, including registered nursing, social work, therapy, biomedical science and certain nursing auxiliary or healthcare assistant roles. The job, occupation code, employer, salary and applicant’s qualifications must all satisfy the immigration rules.
Important: This article provides general information, not personalised legal advice. Immigration rules and sponsor licences change frequently. Confirm every application on GOV.UK and consider a regulated UK immigration adviser for complex cases.
Can Nigerians Still Apply for UK Care Jobs From Nigeria in 2026?
The answer depends on the occupation code, not merely the job title.
| Role or situation | New application from Nigeria in 2026? | Main route |
|---|---|---|
| Care worker or home carer, code 6135 | No, in most cases | In-country transitional cases only |
| Senior care worker, code 6136 | No, in most cases | In-country transitional cases only |
| Registered nurse, codes 2231 to 2237 | Yes, if qualified and sponsored | Health and Care Worker visa |
| Social worker, code 2461 | Yes, if qualified and sponsored | Health and Care Worker visa |
| Nursing auxiliary or assistant, code 6131 | Potentially, if duties and pay genuinely qualify | Health and Care Worker visa |
| Physiotherapist, occupational therapist or radiographer | Yes, if professionally registered and sponsored | Health and Care Worker visa |
| Care manager, code 1232 | Potentially, if the role meets the required skill and salary rules | Health and Care Worker visa |
The official Health and Care Worker visa occupation list confirms that codes 6135 and 6136 are available only for eligible extensions, updates or switches inside the UK. Do not trust an advert simply because it says “healthcare assistant.” Compare the actual duties with the occupation code shown on the Certificate of Sponsorship.
Another Restriction Nigerians Must Understand
Nigeria is on the UK’s red list for ethical international recruitment of health and social care personnel. UK employers and agencies must not actively target residents of Nigeria for recruitment, unless an applicable government-to-government arrangement permits it.
However, a Nigerian resident may independently apply directly to a specific vacancy advertised by the employing organisation. The UK ethical recruitment code expressly distinguishes a direct application from prohibited active recruitment.
Apply on an employer’s official career page, NHS Jobs or Trac. Do not depend on an agency claiming to run a Nigeria-targeted care campaign. Never pay an agent for finding a job. UK law prohibits recruitment agencies from charging applicants job-finding fees.
UK Health and Social Care Jobs Nigerians Can Target
Applicants should target roles that remain open to new overseas sponsorship and match their qualifications.
| Eligible field | Typical annual salary range* | Usual requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Registered nurse | £31,000 to £45,000+ | NMC registration, accepted English evidence |
| Social worker | £32,000 to £48,000+ | Social Work England registration for England |
| Physiotherapist | £31,000 to £45,000+ | HCPC registration |
| Occupational therapist | £31,000 to £45,000+ | HCPC registration |
| Medical radiographer | £31,000 to £46,000+ | HCPC registration |
| Biomedical scientist | £31,000 to £47,000+ | Relevant degree and normally HCPC registration |
| Nursing auxiliary or assistant | About £25,000 to £30,000+ | Duties must genuinely fit code 6131 |
| Residential or domiciliary care manager | About £30,000 to £45,000+ | Management experience, correct code and salary |
*Indicative market ranges, not guaranteed visa thresholds. The offered salary must meet both the immigration minimum and the occupation’s applicable going rate or national pay scale.
The Health and Care Worker route usually requires at least £25,000, although occupation-specific rules may require more. NHS clinical jobs are commonly assessed using national pay scales. Always check the current official salary rule before accepting an offer.
Visa Types and Settlement Pathways
| Immigration route | Who it suits | Sponsorship required? | Settlement potential |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health and Care Worker visa | Eligible medical, health and adult social care professionals | Yes | Usually eligible for ILR after 5 years |
| Skilled Worker visa | Eligible non-health roles or roles outside the health concession | Yes | Usually eligible for ILR after 5 years |
| Global Talent visa | Eligible leaders or potential leaders | No employer sponsor | Possible ILR after 3 or 5 years |
| Student or Graduate route | UK study and temporary post-study work | No sponsor initially | May later lead to sponsored work |
The UK’s equivalent of permanent residence is indefinite leave to remain (ILR). A qualifying Health and Care Worker may normally apply after five continuous years, subject to salary, employment, absence, English and Life in the UK requirements. ILR is not automatic.
Express Entry and the Rural Community Immigration Pilot are Canadian programmes. They cannot provide UK visas or UK permanent residence and should not appear in a UK application plan.
Health and Care Worker Visa Requirements
An applicant normally needs a confirmed eligible offer from a Home Office-approved sponsor, a valid electronic Certificate of Sponsorship, the required salary, and any required professional registration. A new applicant in 2026 must normally prove English at CEFR B2 through an approved test, eligible UK qualification, Ecctis assessment or accepted regulator evidence. They also need £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days unless the sponsor certifies maintenance.
The visa application fee is currently £324 for up to three years and £628 for more than three years. Health and Care Worker visa holders do not pay the immigration health surcharge. Check the current official fees and maintenance rules before applying.
Documents Required From Nigeria
Prepare a valid passport, CoS reference, job title, salary, occupation code, employer name and sponsor licence number. You may also need B2 English evidence, a bank statement, TB certificate from an approved Nigerian clinic, criminal record certificate, professional registration, qualifications and certified translations. Eligible dependants need relationship evidence.
Care workers and senior care workers face special dependant restrictions. Applicants in other eligible professional health roles may have different dependant rights. Check the exact rules for the occupation and application history.
How to Find Genuine Visa-Sponsored Opportunities
Step 1: Choose an occupation that remains eligible
Do not search only for “caregiver jobs.” Search by a qualifying profession and occupation code, for example “registered nurse 2237 visa sponsorship” or “social worker 2461 sponsorship.”
Step 2: Search official job platforms
| Platform | Best use | Website |
|---|---|---|
| NHS Jobs | Direct NHS vacancies across England and Wales | jobs.nhs.uk |
| Trac Jobs | NHS trusts and other public-sector employers | trac.jobs |
| Find a Job | UK government job search service | findajob.dwp.gov.uk |
| NHS Scotland Jobs | Health roles in Scotland | apply.jobs.scot.nhs.uk |
| HSCNI Jobs | Health and social care roles in Northern Ireland | jobs.hscni.net |
Read each advert carefully. Look for wording such as “Skilled Worker sponsorship may be available,” but understand that sponsor status does not guarantee sponsorship for every vacancy.
Step 3: Verify the employer three ways
- Search the legal employer name on the current Home Office register of licensed sponsors.
- For an English care provider, check its service and registration on the Care Quality Commission website.
- Confirm the vacancy exists on the employer’s own website and contact HR using details published there, not the phone number supplied in a WhatsApp message.
Step 4: Apply directly
Tailor a UK-style CV and supporting statement to the person specification. Show clinical competence, safeguarding knowledge, communication and measurable experience.
Step 5: Interview and inspect the offer
Confirm hours, location, salary, deductions, repayment clauses and sponsorship. A CoS is an electronic record, not a paper “certificate” sold by an agent.
Step 6: Apply online for the visa
Apply only through the official GOV.UK Health and Care Worker visa page. You may apply up to three months before the start date shown on the CoS. An overseas decision is usually issued within three weeks after identity and documents are completed, although delays can occur.
Employers and International Recruitment Contacts
No responsible list can promise that a company is “offering sponsorship” continuously. Vacancies and sponsor licences change. The organisations below are legitimate places to search or verify opportunities, not guarantees of a sponsored offer.
| Organisation | Contact or address | Application or verification |
|---|---|---|
| NHS Jobs | NHS Business Services Authority, Stella House, Goldcrest Way, Newcastle upon Tyne NE15 8NY | Search NHS Jobs |
| NHS England | Wellington House, 133-155 Waterloo Road, London SE1 8UG | NHS England careers |
| NHS Scotland | Gyle Square, 1 South Gyle Crescent, Edinburgh EH12 9EB | Apply for NHS Scotland jobs |
| Health and Social Care Northern Ireland | 12-22 Linenhall Street, Belfast BT2 8BS | HSCNI Jobs |
| NHS Employers Ethical Recruiters List | 2 Brewery Wharf, Kendell Street, Leeds LS10 1JR | Check ethical recruiters |
For Nigerians residing in a red-list country, direct employer applications are the correct route. An agency’s appearance on the Ethical Recruiters List does not override the ban on actively targeting Nigeria.
Applying in Nigeria and Embassy Verification
Apply online to UK Visas and Immigration, then follow its instructions for biometrics and documents. The British High Commission does not sell jobs, issue a CoS or guarantee approval.
Use these official channels:
- Apply for a UK work visa
- Contact UK Visas and Immigration
- British High Commission Abuja
- British High Commission address: Plot 1137, Diplomatic Drive, Central Business District, Abuja, Nigeria.
Never use an unofficial “embassy agent.” Verify the employer and CoS independently before biometrics.
Common Immigration and Recruitment Mistakes
- Applying for code 6135 or 6136 from Nigeria: New overseas applications for these roles are closed.
- Paying for a job or CoS: Recruitment fees and sold sponsorship certificates are major fraud warnings.
- Confusing a sponsor licence with a vacancy: A licensed organisation may decline to sponsor a particular job.
- Accepting the wrong occupation code: It must match the real duties, not a title designed to bypass rules.
- Ignoring Nigeria’s red-list status: Apply independently to a specific vacancy.
- Using invalid evidence: New applicants generally need B2 English and an approved TB clinic.
- Assuming sponsorship guarantees ILR: Settlement has separate requirements.
What Nigerians Should Do in 2026
If you have only informal caregiving experience, paying an agent for a UK care-worker visa is not viable. Build an eligible professional pathway instead. With a relevant Nigerian degree or licence, start with the UK regulator, obtain English evidence and apply directly. Otherwise, investigate eligible Skilled Worker roles outside care or suitable study-to-work options.
The decisive rule for 2026 is simple: verify the occupation code, sponsor licence, salary and vacancy independently. A genuine UK work visa starts with a genuine eligible job, not a payment to an agent.
