Heavy Truck Driver Jobs in New Zealand for Migrants: Sponsorship, Salaries and Residence
Heavy truck driver jobs in New Zealand can offer experienced migrants opportunities in freight, refrigerated transport, construction and regional distribution. However, getting a job, obtaining immigration permission and qualifying to drive heavy vehicles are separate requirements.
The usual employer-supported work route is the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). An employer must have the required accreditation and an approved job check for the position. A recruitment advertisement alone does not establish visa eligibility.
There is also an important residence limitation: truck drivers who applied for an AEWV on or after 7 April 2024, or started truck-driving work on an open work visa on or after that date, cannot use the former truck-driver Transport Work to Residence pathway. Claims of automatic permanent residence after two years of driving are misleading for new applicants.
What Types of Truck Driver Jobs Should Migrants Search For?
Employers recruit for different vehicles, cargo and operating conditions. Search by licence class and transport specialism, rather than relying only on “visa sponsorship jobs”.
| Job type | Typical work |
|---|---|
| Class 4 driver | Heavy rigid vehicles and deliveries |
| Class 5 driver | Heavy combinations and linehaul |
| Refrigerated driver | Chilled and frozen freight |
| Tipper driver | Construction materials and aggregates |
| Container driver | Port and intermodal freight |
| Tanker driver | Bulk liquids or specialist cargo |
| Logging driver | Forestry transport |
Before applying, ask whether the vacancy accepts overseas applicants, which New Zealand licence is required and whether the employer supports an AEWV application for that particular role.
Salary Ranges and What the Offer Really Pays
Government career platform Tahatū lists NZ$69,000 to NZ$102,000 annually as the most common pay range for heavy truck drivers. Its broader displayed range runs from approximately NZ$54,000 to NZ$116,000. These are gross figures, not a guaranteed migrant starting salary.
Compare the hourly rate and guaranteed hours before comparing annual totals:
| Example hourly rate | Gross annual pay* |
|---|---|
| NZ$28 | NZ$58,240 |
| NZ$32 | NZ$66,560 |
| NZ$36 | NZ$74,880 |
Illustrations calculated at 40 hours weekly for 52 weeks. They are not verified vacancy offers and exclude overtime, allowances and deductions.
A higher annual figure may depend on longer working hours. Request written details of overtime, accommodation deductions, training costs, night allowances and guaranteed weekly hours.
For relocation planning, budget separately for rent, a housing bond, transport, food, licence conversion, medical examinations, visa fees and flights.
Visa Requirements for Employment
Accredited Employer Work Visa
The AEWV is the principal route to assess for employer-sponsored truck driver jobs in New Zealand. Core requirements include:
- A genuine job offer from an accredited employer.
- An approved job check covering the position.
- At least 30 hours of work weekly.
- Pay meeting the applicable legal and market-rate requirements.
- Evidence of the required skills and experience.
- Compliance with identity, health, character and applicable English requirements.
The general minimum skill requirement is at least two years of relevant experience, or a qualification at NZQCF Level 4 or above, subject to INZ’s detailed rules and exemptions. Employer-specific driving experience and licensing requirements must also be met.
The AEWV is linked to the approved employment. A change of employer, job or location may require a Job Change, variation of conditions or a new visa. Do not assume that an approval allows unrestricted employment.
English Language Requirements
English evidence depends on the occupation’s assessed skill level and exemptions. Since 1 June 2026, AEWV English requirements also cover skill-level 3 occupations, alongside levels 4 and 5.
Check the current INZ requirements before booking an English test. For driving work, practical communication also matters for safety instructions, delivery paperwork and emergency situations.
Driving Licence Requirements for Migrants
A work visa does not replace a driving licence.
NZTA provides separate overseas truck-licence conversion procedures for exempt and non-exempt countries. Applicants from non-exempt countries generally need theory and practical tests. Nigerian applicants should check their licence against NZTA’s current country list and conversion rules.
Possible documents include identity evidence, the overseas licence, an approved translation where necessary, medical evidence and proof of licence validity.
Do not confuse overseas car-licence rules with truck-licence rules. Also check whether a converted licence has a supervisor condition while practical testing is outstanding.
Ask the employer who pays for conversion, whether training is available and what work you can legally perform before obtaining the required licence.
Official guidance: NZTA truck licence conversion.

Steps to Get Visa Sponsorship and Apply
- Prepare a targeted CV. State licence categories, vehicle combinations, cargo experience, employment dates and safety training.
- Gather independently verifiable evidence. Obtain employer references and records supporting your driving experience.
- Apply through official channels. Use employer portals, established agencies and SEEK New Zealand. A job-board listing is not proof of sponsorship.
- Ask direct sponsorship questions. Confirm overseas eligibility, employer accreditation, the approved job check and licence expectations.
- Review the employment agreement. Check wages, hours, location, duties, deductions and any repayment clauses.
- Complete the immigration application. The employer provides the application link after the relevant employer process. Follow INZ’s instructions and submit accurate supporting documents.
- Arrange relocation after approval. Confirm visa conditions, licence arrangements and your agreed start date before committing to travel.
Official application information: Accredited Employer Work Visa.
Requirements and Documents Checklist
Prepare:
- Valid passport and the required photograph.
- Signed employment agreement and job description.
- Employer-provided application details.
- Overseas heavy-vehicle licence and relevant endorsements.
- Employment references showing dates, duties and hours.
- Supporting payslips, tax records or other employment evidence.
- Qualifications and any required qualification assessment.
- English evidence where applicable.
- Police certificates and medical or chest X-ray evidence when required.
- Required translations.
- Family documents if making separate eligible family applications.
A CV alone is insufficient proof of work experience. Names, dates and job histories should agree across your documents.
Can Heavy Truck Drivers Get Permanent Residence?
Transport Work to Residence
This remains relevant only to truck drivers covered by the historical eligibility rules, including the April 2024 cutoff and other conditions. It is not a general route for newly arriving truck drivers.
Skilled Migrant Category
The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) may be possible where an applicant independently meets its requirements.
For points-based SMC eligibility, ANZSCO level 4 or 5 employment must meet the higher skilled-employment wage threshold. From 9 March 2026, the published threshold is NZ$52.50 hourly. Meeting this wage test alone does not establish eligibility; applicants must also satisfy the points and other requirements.
The newer Skilled Work Experience pathway requires an ANZSCO level 1 to 3 occupation. Level 4 or 5 work cannot qualify through that pathway merely because the applicant has many years of experience.
Use the official SMC guidance for a personal eligibility assessment.
Other Residence Possibilities
A genuine move into an eligible Green List occupation, an eligible trade or technician role, or a qualifying partnership may create a separate route. Each has its own conditions. A driving job title cannot be relabelled to manufacture eligibility.
Express Entry and the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) belong to Canada. They are not New Zealand immigration programmes. New Zealand residence applications go through INZ, not Canadian community offices.
After obtaining a New Zealand resident visa, permanent residence normally requires at least two years holding residence, compliance with visa conditions and evidence of commitment to New Zealand. One commitment method is spending at least 184 days in each of the preceding two years as a resident.
Settlement Benefits and Family Planning
An approved job can provide income, local experience and employer training. Residence can provide broader employment flexibility and long-term settlement opportunities, subject to visa conditions.
Partner and child visas are separate applications with eligibility rules. Do not assume that every AEWV holder can sponsor a partner’s work visa. Confirm healthcare and education eligibility before including these benefits in your relocation budget.
Applying at the Embassy: Work Visa Verification
AEWV applications normally follow INZ’s online process. The New Zealand High Commission in Pretoria does not accept visa applications and states that it does not handle visa or immigration enquiries.
For application questions, contact Immigration New Zealand: +64 9 914 4100 or use the official contact page.
For diplomatic contact verification only:
- Mission: New Zealand High Commission, Pretoria.
- Address: 125 Middel Street, Nieuw Muckleneuk, Pretoria, South Africa.
- Telephone: +27 12 435 9000.
- Email: NZHC.Pretoria@mfat.govt.nz.
- Website: Official mission page.
Applicants in Nigeria should follow the document-submission instructions issued for their application rather than travelling to a mission without instructions.
Immigration Errors and Recruitment Mistakes to Avoid
- Paying for a guaranteed job, visa approval or permanent residence.
- Relying on pre-April 2024 truck-driver residence articles.
- Using false references or altered licences.
- Assuming accreditation means every vacancy supports a visa.
- Starting work outside your visa or licence conditions.
- Treating overtime-based earnings as guaranteed salary.
- Paying an unverified visa consultant.
For professional help, verify the individual through the Immigration Advisers Authority register. People giving New Zealand immigration advice must be licensed unless exempt.
Before buying immigration lawyer services, work visa assistance or migrant relocation services, request a written scope, clear fees and a realistic assessment of both employment and residence eligibility.
