Learn how H-2A farm jobs with free housing work, including employer sponsorship, wages, verified recruitment contacts, visa documents, and worker rights. H-2A farm jobs in the US with employer-provided housing offer foreign workers a legal route into temporary or seasonal agricultural employment. A qualifying US employer sponsors the position, and eligible workers who cannot return to their permanent home each day must receive housing at no cost.
However, free accommodation does not mean free meals, guaranteed overtime or permanent residence. Before paying a visa consultant or arranging relocation services, verify the employer, job order, wage, and housing conditions.
What Is the H-2A Visa?
The H-2A visa is a temporary agricultural work visa. The employer must obtain Department of Labor certification and USCIS petition approval before workers normally apply for visas abroad. Applicants cannot independently purchase an H-2A work permit without a qualifying sponsored job.
The employer must demonstrate a temporary or seasonal need and that hiring foreign workers will not adversely affect similarly employed US workers.
Farm Jobs and Construction Work
| Job category | Typical duties |
|---|---|
| Crop worker | Planting, weeding and harvesting |
| Orchard worker | Fruit picking and pruning |
| Nursery worker | Plant care and seasonal production |
| Equipment operator | Tractor and harvest equipment operation |
| Seasonal livestock worker | Qualifying temporary animal-care duties |
Eligibility depends on the actual duties and employer’s temporary need. A year-round farm vacancy is not automatically eligible.
General construction jobs, such as commercial bricklaying, roofing and residential building, are not H-2A farm jobs. Qualifying temporary nonagricultural construction work may fall under H-2B. An agricultural job order may include limited incidental maintenance, but a farm location alone does not make construction work eligible.
Employer-Provided Housing and Worker Benefits
Employers must provide qualifying workers with safe housing at no cost and free daily transportation between that housing and the worksite. Housing may be shared accommodation rather than a private apartment.
Employers must also provide either three meals daily at permitted charges or free cooking facilities. Ask about kitchen access, grocery transport, room occupancy and the housing address before accepting.
Additional protections include a written contract, necessary tools without charge, workers’ compensation coverage and the three-fourths guarantee. This generally requires the employer to offer at least 75% of the contracted workdays’ hours across the contract period, subject to applicable rules.
Inbound travel and subsistence reimbursement generally becomes due after completing 50% of the contract, although minimum-wage rules can require earlier reimbursement. Return transportation generally applies when the worker completes the contract, with exceptions for qualifying onward employment.
These are temporary employment protections, not permanent settlement benefits.
Salary Ranges: Read the Actual H-2A Wage
There is no single nationwide H-2A salary. Rates depend on location, occupation, applicable wage rules and the job order. The employer must comply with the highest applicable required wage.
Wage methodologies have changed, and DOL’s September 2026 notice discusses potential wage adjustments following litigation. Do not rely on an old salary chart or assume the large headline wage on a listing is the foreign worker rate.
Two 2026 DOL job listings illustrate the difference:
| Employer | Listed H-2A hourly rate |
|---|---|
| Stevenson Farms, Idaho | $11.08 |
| S&S Harvest, Pennsylvania | $16.47 |
These are examples from published orders, not a national minimum or assurance of current recruitment. Their headline rates differ from their additional H-2A wage information. Obtain the full order and confirm any subsequent wage updates.
At $16.47 for 40 paid hours, illustrative gross earnings are $658.80 weekly or about $2,855 monthly using 4.33 weeks. Actual earnings depend on hours, taxes and lawful deductions. Do not annualize a short seasonal contract or assume overtime premiums apply to every agricultural position.
Visa Requirements and Eligibility
Workers must have a genuine sponsored agricultural job, meet its experience and physical requirements, qualify for admission and satisfy the temporary visa requirements.
There is no universal university degree or IELTS requirement for H-2A. Individual roles may require experience, references, driving qualifications or other skills. For example, Stevenson Farms’ listing requests agricultural equipment experience and the ability to obtain a driving licence.
Consular officers generally assess whether applicants intend to return home after temporary work. Previous immigration violations, inaccurate declarations or applicable nationality restrictions can affect approval.
For Nigerian applicants: the State Department’s published 2026 partial suspension covers B-1/B-2, F, M and J visas and immigrant visas. H-2A is not among those listed categories. This does not guarantee approval, and applicants should check current embassy instructions and restrictions before paying fees.
Requirements and Documents
Prepare:
- A passport meeting the applicable validity requirement.
- DS-160 confirmation page and appointment confirmation.
- Visa fee receipt where required and a compliant photograph.
- Approved petition receipt number and available I-797 details.
- Job offer, full employment contract and ETA job-order number.
- Experience references or licences required for the role.
- Evidence supporting temporary travel and return plans if requested.
Follow the consulate’s checklist. Do not assume police certificates or immigrant medical examinations are mandatory for every H-2A application.
Steps to Get Employer Sponsorship
- Find a verifiable job. Search SeasonalJobs.dol.gov by agricultural role, state and start date.
- Read the full order. Check duties, wages, hours, accommodation, deductions and dates.
- Contact the named employer. Ask whether it recruits overseas applicants from your country and has remaining vacancies.
- Confirm sponsorship. The employer completes labor certification and the USCIS petition process.
- Apply for the visa. After petition approval, complete DS-160 and follow the embassy’s payment and appointment instructions.
- Attend the interview. Explain the actual duties, employer and temporary contract accurately.
- Travel after approval. Follow employer arrival arrangements and check the admission conditions on your I-94.
A DOL listing does not itself prove USCIS approval or guarantee a visa. It also does not establish that an employer accepts applicants from every country.

Permanent Residence: Can Farm Work Lead to a Green Card?
H-2A does not automatically convert into US permanent residence, even after repeated seasons.
A separate EB-3 employer-sponsored green card process may be relevant where an employer offers qualifying permanent, full-time work. Seasonal H-2A employment alone does not qualify as permanent EB-3 employment. Labor certification, an immigrant petition, visa availability and admissibility requirements generally apply.
Other US options include qualifying family sponsorship and employment categories for applicants with the necessary qualifications. There is no general US rural immigration pilot equivalent to Canada’s RCIP.
Express Entry and the Rural Community Immigration Pilot are Canadian programs. They cannot give US residence or convert an H-2A visa. Applicants considering Canada should use IRCC’s official Express Entry and RCIP pages and the participating community’s designated-employer process. Neither program has a universal recruitment-office address.
Before buying an EB-3 sponsorship package, ask a licensed US immigration lawyer to verify the permanent job, legal fees and applicable visa restrictions. Nigerian applicants should specifically review the separate immigrant-visa suspension.
Embassy Contacts and Work Visa Verification
| US mission in Nigeria | Address and main phone |
|---|---|
| Embassy Abuja | 1075 Diplomatic Drive, Central District. +234-209-461-4328 |
| Consulate Lagos | 2 Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island. +234-201-460-3400 |
Official website: https://ng.usembassy.gov
These are published main switchboard numbers, not guaranteed visa enquiry lines. Use the mission website for current processing locations, visa contacts and appointment links.
Complete DS-160 through https://ceac.state.gov. Check employment orders at https://seasonaljobs.dol.gov and application status through official government channels.
Petition approval does not guarantee visa issuance. The embassy assesses eligibility, while border officials decide admission. No recruiter or visa consultant can override those decisions.
Recruitment Fees and Immigration Mistakes to Avoid
Employers cannot charge workers recruitment fees or shift employer labor-certification costs, including associated attorney and agent fees, onto workers. Personal passport expenses and lawful visa charges require separate consideration.
Avoid paying for guaranteed sponsorship, submitting false experience records, relying on screenshots instead of full contracts, accepting undisclosed housing deductions or entering on a visitor visa to work. Also avoid assuming you can change employers without meeting the relevant authorization requirements.
Keep contracts, receipts and messages. For US wage or housing problems, contact DOL’s Wage and Hour Division at 1-866-487-9243.
Choosing Immigration and Relocation Services
A licensed immigration lawyer can assess eligibility and explain complex sponsorship issues. Recruitment agencies should identify the actual employer and authorized recruitment channel. Relocation services can help with travel planning but cannot grant work authorization.
Ask for written service fees, refund terms and professional credentials. Purchase international health insurance or travel cover only after checking existing coverage, exclusions and employer obligations. Free housing does not automatically include comprehensive medical insurance or permission to bring family members into worker accommodation.
The strongest offer is supported by a verifiable employer, a complete job order, lawful wages and written housing arrangements.
