Cleaning jobs in the UK and how to apply

People searching for cleaning jobs in the UK with CoS should know that ordinary cleaner and housekeeper roles do not qualify for Skilled Worker sponsorship. Verified examples below include £13.31 an hour for school cleaning and £25,272 annually, before part-time adjustment, for NHS cleaning. Beginners and experienced applicants may qualify for employment if they already have suitable UK work permission. This guide explains the sponsorship restrictions, links to genuine vacancies and shows how to check offers before applying.

1. Cleaning jobs and pay

All figures are British pounds, before tax.

Job or benchmark Verified pay Typical requirement
Statutory minimum for most workers aged 21 or over £12.71 per hour Legal minimum, not a vacancy
Cleaner, Ferndown First School £13.31 per hour; advertised annual pay £6,582 No experience required
Cleaning Services Assistant, Bradford Teaching Hospitals £25,272 annually, pro rata Previous cleaning experience and specified English and maths qualifications

The National Living Wage increased to £12.71 on 1 April 2026. Different statutory rates apply to younger workers and qualifying apprentices.

Pro rata means adjusted for the contracted working pattern. A part-time vacancy displaying £25,272 pro rata does not promise that amount as your actual annual income.

The school and NHS figures come from the employer recruitment listings discussed below.

2. Which cleaning jobs match your experience?

Entry-level cleaners

School, office and general commercial cleaning can suit applicants without formal cleaning qualifications. Employers usually assess reliability, attention to detail, safe working and willingness to learn.

Ferndown First School explicitly states that experience is unnecessary. Its duties include cleaning classrooms and shared areas, using equipment safely and reporting hazards.

Experienced domestic and hospital cleaners

Hospital cleaning requires close attention to infection prevention, waste disposal and confidentiality. Employers may prefer experience with cleaning machines or healthcare environments.

Bradford Teaching Hospitals requires previous cleaning experience. Its person specification also includes English and maths GCSEs or accepted equivalents or functional-skills tests. Hospital experience and a cleaning certificate are desirable rather than essential.

Supervisors and specialist cleaners

Supervisors need evidence of allocating work, checking standards and supporting staff. Specialist roles may require equipment training or additional safety instruction.

However, experience or a supervisory title does not automatically create visa eligibility. These are employment requirements, while sponsorship follows separate immigration rules.

3. Where to find legitimate employers and vacancies

The opportunities below are genuine cleaning vacancies. Their sponsorship position is stated separately.

Bradford Teaching Hospitals: sponsorship explicitly unavailable

The Cleaning Services Assistant vacancy lists:

  • Location: Bradford, West Yorkshire.
  • Reference: 389-26-8342396.
  • Pay: £25,272 annually, pro rata.
  • Listed hours: 27.5 weekly.
  • Closing date: 29 October 2026, unless closed earlier.
  • Application: Use the listing’s “Apply online now” link.

The employer expressly states that it cannot provide sponsorship for this role. Applicants must therefore have another suitable basis for working in the UK.

Ferndown First School: no sponsorship offer verified

The school cleaner vacancy on Dorset Council’s recruitment website advertises:

  • Location: Ferndown, Dorset.
  • Pay: £13.31 an hour, with advertised annual pay of £6,582.
  • Hours: Ten weekly, term time plus four weeks.
  • Experience: None required.
  • Closing date: 13 November 2026.
  • Application: Follow the application-form instructions on the vacancy page.

The advert does not establish overseas recruitment or CoS support. Ordinary school cleaning is not an eligible Skilled Worker occupation.

Why a sponsor licence is not enough

The Home Office sponsor register identifies organisations licensed to sponsor workers. It does not prove that every vacancy they advertise is sponsorable.

A hospital may sponsor nurses while requiring its cleaners to hold independent work permission. Always read the individual vacancy and occupation rules.

4. Can cleaning jobs in the UK qualify for a CoS?

Ordinary cleaning occupations are ineligible

The current Skilled Worker occupation table marks these occupations as ineligible:

  • 9223: Cleaners and domestics.
  • 6231: Housekeepers and related occupations.
  • 6240: Cleaning and housekeeping managers and supervisors.
  • 9221: Window cleaners.
  • 9131: Industrial cleaning process occupations.

Paying a higher salary does not remove an occupation’s ineligibility. Neither does changing the title while keeping ordinary cleaning duties.

Some genuine business-management roles fall under different codes. Those need individual assessment, including the additional restrictions on medium-skilled occupations. They should not be presented as an entry-level cleaning route.

What a CoS actually does

A Certificate of Sponsorship is an electronic employer record supporting a visa application. It is not a visa or permission to start work.

For a qualifying Skilled Worker role, the process normally involves an eligible job offer, a licensed sponsor assigning a CoS, and an online visa application. The applicant must satisfy the applicable salary, English-language and other requirements.

The UK does not use Canada’s LMIA system.

Does an NHS cleaning job qualify for the Health and Care Worker visa?

An NHS workplace alone is insufficient. The Health and Care Worker route requires an eligible occupation as well as an appropriate employer. Ordinary hospital cleaning does not become eligible simply because it supports patient care.

5. Eligibility, documents and likely costs

If you already have permission to work

Cleaning employment may be possible where your immigration status allows it. For example, a Graduate visa permits work in most jobs. That route has its own eligibility requirements and is not a visa that overseas cleaners can obtain solely through a job offer.

Before applying, prepare:

  • A CV or completed employer application form.
  • Employment history and references.
  • Evidence of qualifications specifically requested.
  • Proof of identity and your right to undertake the work.
  • Documents needed for any required safeguarding checks.

School and some healthcare vacancies require DBS screening. Follow the employer’s instructions rather than buying an unrelated certificate.

Use GOV.UK’s right-to-work guidance to establish how to provide evidence, including a share code where applicable. A National Insurance number alone does not establish immigration permission.

Worker expenses

There is no valid “cleaner CoS fee package” for an ineligible role.

If you separately qualify for a genuine Skilled Worker occupation, standard application fees currently range from £819 to £1,865. The healthcare surcharge is usually £1,035 per year, and applicants generally need £1,270 maintenance funds, unless exempt. These figures do not make ordinary cleaning eligible.

Employer responsibilities

For an eligible Skilled Worker sponsorship, the employer pays the £525 CoS assignment fee. GOV.UK warns that a sponsor’s licence may be revoked if it asks the worker to pay that fee or associated costs. The employer also bears any applicable Immigration Skills Charge.

6. Can cleaning work lead to permanent residence?

A cleaning job does not itself provide a UK settlement route.

If you already hold permission on a route leading to indefinite leave to remain, your settlement eligibility follows that route’s conditions. For example, the partner family route has residence, relationship and other requirements.

The Graduate route permits cleaning work but is not itself a settlement route. Securing a permanent cleaning contract does not change that.

Applicants needing employer sponsorship should assess occupations matching their genuine qualifications rather than relying on a promised future conversion from cleaning to sponsored employment.

7. How to apply, step by step

  1. Check your work permission first. Establish whether you can lawfully undertake cleaning work.
  2. Choose suitable vacancies. Compare duties, shifts, experience and travel requirements.
  3. Calculate actual earnings. Check contracted hours, term-time arrangements and pro-rata pay.
  4. Tailor the application. Describe equipment, cleaning procedures and responsibilities you have actually handled.
  5. Read the sponsorship statement. If you need a CoS, check the occupation’s eligibility before spending money.
  6. Verify the employer independently. Use its official recruitment website and published contact details.
  7. Complete recruitment checks. Provide references and right-to-work evidence through the employer’s stated process.

If you require sponsorship and the job is ordinary cleaning, stop before paying visa or recruitment charges.

8. Common mistakes and job-offer verification

Watch for offers that:

  • Promise a CoS without assessing your duties or eligibility.
  • Claim every NHS job qualifies for the Health and Care Worker visa.
  • Describe a cleaner as a manager only on immigration paperwork.
  • Ask for payment to a private account to “reserve sponsorship.”
  • Promise that a visitor visa allows paid cleaning work.
  • Display full-time-equivalent pay as your actual part-time salary.

A Standard Visitor cannot ordinarily take paid or unpaid employment with a UK company. Verify any proposed arrangement against the official visitor conditions.

A genuine employer name or sponsor-register entry does not authenticate a recruiter. Confirm the offer with the employer through independently obtained contact details.

9. Frequently asked questions

Can the Seasonal Worker visa cover hotel cleaning?

No. The UK Seasonal Worker route covers specified horticulture and poultry work, not general hotel or hospital cleaning.

Does a cleaning certificate improve sponsorship eligibility?

It may strengthen a job application, but it does not change the occupation’s immigration classification.

Does “permanent position” mean permanent immigration permission?

No. It describes the employment contract. Your right to remain and work depends on your immigration status.

Can I work as a self-employed cleaner instead?

Only if your immigration conditions permit self-employment. Calling the arrangement self-employed does not create work permission.

Action checklist

  • Confirm that your immigration status permits cleaning work.
  • Check actual pay, hours and contract conditions.
  • Read the employer’s sponsorship statement.
  • Verify the occupation code before considering a CoS.
  • Apply through the employer’s genuine recruitment channel.
  • Never pay to disguise an ineligible cleaning role.
