Alberta Advantage Immigration Program: Eligibility and Application Process

Learn how the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program works, including AAIP eligibility, worker streams, job offers, fees, application steps and PR pathways.

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is a provincial immigration program that nominates qualified foreign workers and entrepreneurs for Canadian permanent residence. It targets applicants who can fill labour shortages, support Alberta’s economy or establish eligible businesses in the province.

AAIP is not a work visa, recruitment agency or guaranteed route to permanent residence. Alberta selects and nominates candidates, but Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada makes the final decision on permanent residence, medical, criminal and security admissibility.

Successful nominees may include their spouse or common-law partner and dependent children in their permanent residence application. This can provide long-term settlement benefits, including the ability to live and work permanently in Canada, access public healthcare subject to provincial rules, and eventually apply for Canadian citizenship if eligible.

Important: AAIP requirements and selection priorities can change without notice. Confirm the current rules on the official Alberta Advantage Immigration Program website before applying.

Alberta Immigration Streams for Foreign Workers

AAIP currently operates four principal streams for workers.

AAIP worker stream Intended applicants Job offer required?
Alberta Opportunity Stream Temporary foreign workers already living and working in Alberta Yes
Alberta Express Entry Stream Candidates with valid federal Express Entry profiles Depends on pathway and selection priority
Rural Renewal Stream Workers endorsed by a designated rural Alberta community Yes
Tourism and Hospitality Stream Eligible hospitality workers already employed in Alberta Yes

AAIP also operates entrepreneur streams for rural entrepreneurs, Alberta graduates, foreign graduates and experienced farmers. These business programs have separate investment, ownership, experience and net-worth requirements.

Alberta Opportunity Stream

The Alberta Opportunity Stream is mainly for temporary foreign workers who are already living and working full-time in Alberta.

Applicants generally need:

  • Valid temporary resident status
  • A valid work permit based on an LMIA or accepted LMIA exemption
  • Current full-time employment in an eligible Alberta occupation
  • A qualifying full-time job offer from an Alberta employer
  • Required work experience
  • Minimum language-test results
  • At least the required education
  • Licensing or certification for a regulated occupation

The job offer normally must provide continuous paid employment for at least 12 months and at least 30 hours per week. Part-time, casual, seasonal and independent-contractor positions are generally ineligible.

Applicants must remain eligible while the application is assessed. Losing a qualifying job, allowing a permit to expire or changing employers without reporting the change can affect the application. Review the full Alberta Opportunity Stream eligibility criteria.

Alberta Express Entry Stream

The Alberta Express Entry Stream allows the province to select a limited number of candidates from Canada’s federal Express Entry pool.

A candidate generally must:

  • Have an active Express Entry profile
  • Qualify for a federal Express Entry program
  • Have a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System score of 300
  • Intend to live and work permanently in Alberta
  • Work in an occupation supporting Alberta’s priorities
  • Have sufficient time remaining on the Express Entry profile

The province may prioritize candidates with experience in construction, agriculture, aviation, healthcare, technology or other sectors experiencing labour shortages.

Dedicated options include:

  • Accelerated Tech Pathway
  • Dedicated Health Care Pathway
  • Law Enforcement Pathway
  • Priority-sector selections

Candidates cannot simply submit a provincial application without being selected. They must first meet the relevant process requirements and receive an invitation from Alberta.

A nomination connected to Express Entry normally adds 600 CRS points, substantially improving the candidate’s likelihood of receiving a federal invitation. However, the applicant must continue to satisfy both AAIP and federal Express Entry requirements.

Rural Renewal Stream

The Rural Renewal Stream allows designated rural Alberta communities to recruit and endorse foreign workers for local labour shortages.

Applicants generally require:

  • A full-time job offer from an eligible employer
  • Employment in a designated Alberta community
  • A community endorsement letter
  • Required qualifying work experience
  • Minimum education and language results
  • Licensing for a regulated occupation
  • Settlement funds, where required
  • Genuine intention to live in the endorsing community

Applicants outside Canada may be considered, but the community must first approve the employer and issue an endorsement. A rural job offer without an endorsement does not qualify.

Check the official Rural Renewal Stream page and contact the relevant community economic development office directly.

Tourism and Hospitality Stream

This stream targets eligible workers who are already living and working in Alberta’s tourism and hospitality industry.

Eligible occupations include certain:

  • Restaurant and accommodation managers
  • Food-service supervisors
  • Chefs and cooks
  • Food counter attendants
  • Hotel front-desk clerks
  • Bartenders and servers
  • Light-duty cleaners
  • Tourism and recreation workers

Applicants generally need a qualifying LMIA-based work permit, six consecutive months of employment with the same approved employer, a full-time job offer, minimum CLB 4 language scores and at least Canadian-equivalent secondary education.

A foreign applicant cannot normally use this stream as a direct overseas job-application program. Review the Tourism and Hospitality Stream requirements.

AAIP Employer and Job-Offer Requirements

The Alberta employer must operate a legitimate, established business in the province. General employer requirements include:

  • Registration or incorporation in Canada
  • An established place of business in Alberta
  • At least two completed fiscal years of active Alberta operations
  • Ability to fulfil the employment contract
  • A genuine need for the position
  • Compliance with employment and immigration laws
  • Sufficient revenue and Alberta employees, or compliance with nominee limits

The job offer generally must be:

  • Signed by the employer and employee
  • Full-time, at least 30 hours weekly
  • Continuous and paid
  • For at least 12 months
  • In an employer-employee relationship
  • At the required provincial or LMIA wage
  • Based at an Alberta work location

Temporary-agency work, independent contracting, seasonal work and employment performed remotely from outside Alberta generally do not meet the standard job-offer requirements. Complete requirements are available on Alberta’s job offer and employer requirements page.

Construction Jobs That May Support Alberta Immigration

Alberta may prioritize workers with construction experience through its Express Entry selections. Some occupations may also qualify under the Opportunity or Rural Renewal streams when all program conditions are met.

Construction occupation NOC Approximate Alberta wage range
Construction manager 70010 C$35 to C$70 per hour
Carpenter 72310 C$25 to C$42 per hour
Electrician 72200 C$30 to C$48 per hour
Plumber 72300 C$28 to C$46 per hour
Welder 72106 C$25 to C$45 per hour
Heavy equipment operator 73400 C$26 to C$42 per hour
Construction millwright 72400 C$32 to C$50 per hour
Construction trade helper 75110 C$20 to C$32 per hour
Civil engineering technologist 22300 C$28 to C$48 per hour

These are broad estimates, not guaranteed salaries. Candidates should verify current wages through the Government of Canada Job Bank wage reports and Alberta’s ALIS occupation database.

Trade certification may be compulsory for certain occupations. Applicants should check Alberta Tradesecrets before accepting a job.

How Employer Sponsorship Works

“Visa sponsorship” is an informal term. In practice, an Alberta employer may support a foreign worker through one or more separate processes:

  1. The employer provides a genuine job offer.
  2. The employer obtains an LMIA when required.
  3. The worker applies for an employer-specific work permit.
  4. The worker begins authorized employment in Alberta.
  5. The employer supports eligible AAIP documentation.
  6. The worker submits a Worker Expression of Interest.
  7. If invited, the worker applies for provincial nomination.
  8. After nomination, the worker applies to IRCC for permanent residence.

A positive LMIA does not guarantee AAIP nomination. Similarly, an AAIP nomination does not automatically authorize someone to work. The person must hold or obtain appropriate work authorization.

AAIP Application Process

Step 1: Confirm eligibility

Use Alberta’s official AAIP Eligibility Explorer to identify a potentially suitable stream. Check your occupation, permit, employment, language, education and job-offer conditions.

Step 2: Submit a Worker Expression of Interest

Candidates must submit a Worker Expression of Interest through the AAIP portal before they can be invited to a worker stream.

The WEOI:

  • Is scored out of 100 points
  • Does not have a fixed minimum submission score
  • Remains valid for 12 months
  • Must remain accurate and updated
  • Costs C$135
  • Does not guarantee an invitation

AAIP selects candidates based on scores, labour-market priorities, nomination allocations and application volumes.

Step 3: Receive an invitation

Selected candidates receive an invitation by email. The applicant has 15 days to accept the invitation and create a draft application.

Step 4: Complete the application

After creating the application, the candidate has 30 days to complete it, upload supporting documents and submit it through the AAIP portal.

The worker-stream application fee is C$1,500. It is generally non-refundable, including when the application is refused or withdrawn.

Step 5: Wait for assessment

AAIP may contact the applicant or employer for verification. Official AAIP email correspondence comes from an address ending in @gov.ab.ca.

Step 6: Receive the nomination decision

Approved candidates receive a nomination certificate. A provincial nomination is not permanent residence. The nominee must then apply to IRCC under the correct federal process.

The complete procedure is available in Alberta’s worker-stream application instructions.

Documents Required

Documents vary by stream but may include:

  • Valid passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage or divorce documents
  • Work permit and immigration-status records
  • Job offer and employment contract
  • LMIA or LMIA-exemption evidence
  • Employer Declaration and Authorization Form
  • Employment reference letters
  • Pay statements and tax records
  • Educational certificates and transcripts
  • Educational Credential Assessment
  • IELTS General, CELPIP General, PTE Core, TEF Canada or TCF Canada results
  • Trade certificate or professional licence
  • Express Entry profile information
  • Rural community endorsement letter
  • Proof of settlement funds
  • Police certificates and medical examination for the federal stage

Reference letters should identify the employer, dates, hours, salary, position and duties. Job duties must correspond substantially with the selected NOC.

Companies to Monitor for Alberta Jobs

No company should be described as a guaranteed visa sponsor. LMIA and AAIP support depend on the vacancy, work location, employer eligibility and recruitment outcome.

AAIP Compared With Express Entry and RCIP

Program Decision maker Job offer Main benefit
AAIP Alberta nomination, federal PR decision Usually required for worker streams Alberta-focused PR pathway
Express Entry Federal government Not always required Federal skilled-worker selection
RCIP Participating community and federal government Required from designated employer Direct PR route through participating rural community
LMIA work permit Federal government Required Temporary authorization to work
Alberta Rural Renewal Alberta and designated community Required PR nomination for rural Alberta employment

Claresholm participates in the federal Rural Community Immigration Pilot. RCIP is separate from AAIP’s Rural Renewal Stream. Applicants need a designated employer, an eligible priority occupation and community recommendation. Review the federal RCIP page.

Mistakes and Immigration Scams to Avoid

  • Paying for an employment offer or LMIA
  • Submitting a WEOI without meeting a stream’s eligibility rules
  • Entering an inaccurate NOC
  • Exaggerating language scores or employment history
  • Allowing a work permit or Express Entry profile to expire
  • Using an ineligible seasonal or part-time job offer
  • Failing to report a job or family-status change
  • Assuming an invitation guarantees nomination
  • Assuming nomination guarantees permanent residence
  • Buying a rural community endorsement
  • Using an unauthorized immigration consultant
  • Responding to supposed AAIP emails sent from Gmail or Yahoo

Conclusion

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program can provide a credible pathway to Canadian permanent residence for eligible workers who can meet Alberta’s labour-market needs. The strongest route depends on whether the applicant already works in Alberta, has an Express Entry profile, holds a rural community endorsement or works in an eligible tourism and hospitality occupation.

Applicants should confirm their eligibility before paying the WEOI fee, maintain accurate documents and use only official Alberta and federal application portals. Employers may support the process, but no employer, recruiter, lawyer or consultant can guarantee an invitation, provincial nomination or permanent residence.
